The Tenaya Fuels Reduction Project, funded by a BLM Cooperative Agreement, is a 281 acre project to protect the community of Groveland, and particularly Tenaya Elementary School, in southern Tuolumne County. The project will reduce wildfire risk through strategically placed fuel breaks that will interrupt potential fire spread into the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) and fuels management that provide treated areas with low fuel for fire crews to work from and more quickly stop fire spread. The proposed project will develop a project plan, complete environmental review, and implement fuels reduction treatments on approximately 255 acres of private land and 26 acres of BLM land. The project will also establish a 79 acre fuel break on the ridgeline south of Tenaya Elementary along Vernal Drive and Merrel Road. The project will be implemented by the Tuolumne County Resource Conservation District (TCRCD) utilizing contractors for implementation and is estimated to cost approximately $995,701.78.
